There is something that happens when you are in a room with people who truly understand what you are going through something that no amount of individual therapy can replicate. Group therapy is one of the most powerful components of addiction treatment, and it is a core part of every program at Shine. Serving Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Malden, Chelsea, and the greater North Shore.
Confidential. No pressure. We'll explain your options clearly.
Not a support group. A clinically facilitated therapeutic experience with evidence behind it.
Group therapy in addiction treatment is not the same as a support group like AA or NA though both have value. Group therapy at Shine is clinically facilitated by a licensed therapist who guides the session with specific therapeutic goals, structured content, and evidence-based interventions. The therapist is not just a moderator they are an active clinical presence who shapes the work of the group toward meaningful outcomes.
Group therapy works on multiple levels simultaneously. On the surface, it provides psychoeducation structured information about addiction, recovery skills, and coping strategies. Below the surface, it provides something more powerful: the experience of being witnessed, understood, and challenged by people who are walking the same road. Research consistently shows that this peer dimension of group therapy produces outcomes that individual therapy alone cannot achieve.
At Shine Wellness & Recovery, group therapy is not optional programming added to fill the schedule. It is a core clinical component of our PHP, IOP, and outpatient programs as essential to recovery as individual therapy, and in some ways more so. We serve individuals and families across Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Malden, Chelsea, Medford, Everett, and the greater North Shore.
Every group at Shine is led by a licensed clinician not a peer counselor or volunteer. The clinical presence shapes the group toward therapeutic outcomes that peer-only groups cannot achieve.
A review of 50 rigorous studies found group therapy effective across multiple substances including opioids, cocaine, marijuana, and stimulants. Group CBT plus pharmacotherapy outperformed pharmacotherapy alone for opioid use disorder.
Group therapy at Shine is not just sharing stories. It is structured skill-building, role-playing, relapse prevention work, and peer feedback all within a clinically contained, trauma-informed environment.
Fifty studies. Multiple substances. Consistent findings.
rigorous studies reviewed in a 2021 Brown University and Harvard Medical School research paper confirmed group therapy effective across cocaine, opioid, marijuana, methamphetamine, and co-occurring disorder presentations
López et al., Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy, 2021 Brown University and Harvard Medical School
group therapy combined with pharmacotherapy was more effective at reducing opioid use than pharmacotherapy alone making group therapy a clinical amplifier for MAT outcomes
López et al., Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy, 2021
identifies group therapy as one of the most commonly used and clinically effective formats in addiction treatment in its Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment guide

These findings reflect real outcomes for real people across Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Malden, Chelsea, and communities like them. Group therapy is not a supplement to real treatment. For many people, it is the most clinically powerful component of their recovery.
Some things can only happen in a room with other people.
Individual therapy is essential. But it has a fundamental limitation: it takes place between two people, in a room separated from the rest of the world, with a clinician who no matter how skilled has not personally lived what you are living. Group therapy provides something different. Something that, for many people in recovery, turns out to be the most transformative part of their treatment.
The moment a person in early recovery realizes that others in the room have had the same thought, felt the same shame, made the same choices something shifts. Isolation is one of the most powerful drivers of addiction. Group therapy breaks it.
When you commit to something in front of a group of people who are also working toward recovery, the commitment means something different than when you make it privately. Group creates a kind of accountability that is qualitatively different from what any individual relationship can provide.
Every person in the group is at a different stage of recovery, with a different history and a different set of coping strategies. The learning that happens laterally from peers often lands differently and sticks longer than learning that comes from a clinician.
Group therapy provides a real social context for practicing the skills built in individual therapy communication, conflict, boundary-setting, emotional expression. The group is a microcosm of real life, and what happens in it is real practice.
Many people with addiction have spent years hiding from family, from colleagues, from themselves. Being fully seen by a group of people who do not flinch, who understand, and who keep showing up creates an experience of being witnessed that is deeply healing.
Seeing someone further along in recovery managing the same challenges you are facing, building the life you want is one of the most powerful sources of hope available. Group therapy provides that model in a way no clinical description can replicate.
Not every group session looks the same each serves a different clinical purpose.
Group therapy at Shine is not a single session format repeated every day. Different types of group sessions are woven into the treatment schedule across PHP, IOP, and outpatient levels of care each targeting a different dimension of recovery.
Structured sessions that provide evidence-based information about addiction, the brain, recovery, co-occurring disorders, and treatment approaches. Knowledge reduces shame and helps people understand what is happening to them clinically not just personally.
Clinician-facilitated sessions focused on building the specific cognitive and behavioral skills taught in CBT trigger identification, cognitive restructuring, coping strategy development, and behavioral activation. Skills are introduced, practiced, and refined in the group context.
Learn more about CBTStructured sessions focused on the three stages of relapse emotional, mental, and physical and on building individualized prevention plans. The group context makes this work particularly powerful because clients can learn from each other's warning signs and strategies.
Learn more about RPTLess structured, more interpersonally focused sessions where clients explore their emotional experiences, practice honest communication, and work through the relational patterns that have contributed to substance use. Process groups are where the deepest interpersonal work happens.
Sessions integrating mindfulness practices, meditation, and wellness skills into the group setting building the mind-body tools that support recovery alongside the cognitive and emotional work of other group formats.
Learn more about holistic programmingAt Shine, every group is facilitated with an awareness of how trauma shapes group dynamics.
Group therapy can be a powerful healing environment and it can also feel exposing, unsafe, or triggering for people with significant trauma histories. At Shine, all groups are facilitated through a trauma-informed lens.
This means clinicians set clear group agreements around confidentiality, respect, and safety at the start of every group. It means participation is encouraged but never forced. It means the clinician monitors group dynamics actively and intervenes when content or interaction becomes destabilizing for any member. And it means the pace of group disclosure and vulnerability is calibrated to what the group can hold not pushed beyond what is safe.
Before any group can do meaningful clinical work, members need to feel safe. At Shine, building group safety through clear agreements, consistent facilitation, and demonstrated respect is the first and most ongoing task of every group.
Everything shared in group sessions at Shine is confidential protected by the same federal standards that apply to all clinical care. Group members are asked to commit to confidentiality as a foundational group agreement at the start of every group.
