A practical, skills-based approach to understanding and changing the patterns that drive addiction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The core insight behind CBT is straightforward: the way we think about a situation directly shapes how we feel and what we do. By identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns, people can change their emotional responses and ultimately their behaviors.
In addiction treatment, CBT has proven particularly effective because it addresses the specific thought patterns and behavioral triggers that drive substance use. Rather than focusing primarily on the past, CBT is present-focused and skills-oriented, giving clients practical tools they can use in real life, in real time, to navigate cravings, triggers, and high-risk situations.
At Shine Wellness & Recovery, CBT is woven into every level of care, from our PHP and IOP programs to our standard outpatient services, delivered by licensed clinicians who take the time to actually know you. We serve individuals and families across Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Malden, Chelsea, and the greater North Shore.
CBT does not require years of exploring the past. It focuses on what is happening now and what skills you can build today to respond differently tomorrow.
The tools built in CBT belong to you. They do not stay in the therapy room. They travel with you into work, relationships, and every situation where a craving or trigger might appear.
CBT is one of the most extensively studied therapeutic approaches in the world, with consistent evidence from SAMHSA, NIDA, and major clinical trials supporting its effectiveness for substance use disorders.
The evidence is clear. CBT works for addiction, and the numbers back it up.
reduction in relapse rates with CBT compared to traditional treatment methods, according to SAMHSA
Source: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
patients across 34 randomized controlled trials showed CBT produced meaningful reductions in drug and alcohol use, strongest effects seen for cannabis, cocaine, and opioids
Source: National Institutes of Health, meta-analysis of 34 randomized controlled trials
of people with addiction relapse without proper treatment support, CBT directly targets the thought patterns and triggers that drive those relapses
Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
These numbers represent real outcomes for real people, across Saugus, Lynn, Revere, Malden, Chelsea, and communities like theirs across Massachusetts and the country. CBT is not a theory. It is a tool that has been tested, retested, and consistently shown to help people build lasting recovery.
Not a generic program. A personalized approach built around your specific patterns and goals.
CBT at Shine is delivered in both individual and group settings as part of our PHP, IOP, and Outpatient programs. Your therapist works with you to identify the specific thoughts, feelings, and situations that have driven your substance use, and to build a personalized set of skills for responding differently.
We work with you to map the specific people, places, emotions, and situations that trigger cravings or risky behavior, because you cannot navigate what you have not named.
We identify the distorted or unhelpful thought patterns that fuel substance use, things like "I can't cope without it" or "one won't matter", and replace them with more accurate, useful ways of thinking.
We build a personalized toolkit of practical coping strategies for managing cravings, stress, and high-risk situations, skills you can use in real life, not just in a therapy room.
A core component of CBT in addiction treatment, identifying warning signs early, planning for high-risk moments, and building the kind of self-awareness that makes relapse less likely and recovery more sustainable.
We help you identify and build non-substance-related activities that provide genuine reward and meaning, addressing one of the most common drivers of relapse: boredom and emptiness.
CBT builds structured problem-solving skills for the practical life challenges that often contribute to substance use, financial stress, relationship conflict, employment, and more.
At Shine, CBT is never delivered in isolation from the experiences that shaped you.
Most people struggling with addiction have also experienced trauma. The two are deeply connected, trauma shapes the thought patterns and emotional responses that CBT works to change. According to NIDA, between 26 and 52 percent of people with a substance use disorder also experience PTSD. At Shine, all CBT is delivered through a trauma-informed lens.
This means your therapist approaches your history with care, moves at a pace you can manage, and ensures that the therapeutic work never retraumatizes. Safety, consistency, and trust are built before deep cognitive work begins. And the CBT you receive at Shine is not a cookie-cutter protocol, it is a human conversation that takes the full context of your life seriously.
Every CBT session at Shine is delivered with an awareness of how trauma shapes thinking, feeling, and behavior. Your past is not ignored in CBT, it is understood and held with care.
CBT at Shine works alongside Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) as part of a comprehensive clinical approach, each modality reinforcing the others for stronger outcomes.
Whether you are in PHP, IOP, or Outpatient, CBT is woven into your treatment from day one.
CBT is delivered in both individual and group formats as part of our PHP, the most intensive level of outpatient care. Multiple CBT sessions per week allow for deep, consistent skill-building during the critical early stage of recovery.
